As artificial intelligence continues to advance and gradually permeate various aspects of our world, it’s becoming increasingly crucial for people to pause and reflect on the changes unfolding and consider how we can adapt and enhance ourselves in response.

People usually look at new things in society with a sense of fear and distaste. While it is easy for the new generation to immerse themselves with this advancement, the older generations have a fairly opposite reaction and it is happening rightfully so.

The emergence of social media platforms has introduced concepts like influencers and earning opportunities, which can be perplexing to the older generation. Their frustration stems from the challenge of grasping these relatively new concepts. Similarly, people experience fear regarding AI’s impact on job displacement. Moreover, concerns arise from the lack of privacy and the younger generation’s growing dependence on AI, leading to diminished creativity and independence. These trends contribute to significant anxiety among older generations.

Is AI just a threat to the world? Are there any positives to it?

It would be unfair to solely attribute negative impacts to AI on human civilization. Despite its drawbacks, AI has indeed brought efficiency to various aspects of life.

In sectors such as healthcare, finance, and transportation, AI has made significant contributions. For instance, in healthcare, AI has revolutionized the diagnosis process by analyzing medical images like MRIs and X-rays, enabling early detection of diseases such as cancer with greater speed and accuracy than traditional methods.

Moreover, AI has fostered a sense of global connectivity, often referred to as the “global village.” Applications like Duolingo and Google Translate have made communication between individuals from different linguistic backgrounds easier and more accessible.

Additionally, AI has played a pivotal role in transportation by enhancing efficiency through traffic detection and analysis. This enables better decision-making regarding route selection, ultimately improving overall transportation systems.

The last factor that can be taken into consideration is the role of AI in economy. A project undertaken by Price Waterhouse Coopers estimated that “artificial intelligence technologies could increase global GDP by $15.7 trillion, a full 14%, by 2030.”

Is AI taking over the jobs of human? Is there any need for us to be worried?

There is no definite answer to this question. One part of the society believes that AI is taking over those parts of the jobs that are tedious and monotonous for humans which will allow them to be engaged more on the creative side.

While the other section of society ardently thinks that AI is taking over human jobs. The democratization of various menial jobs is leaving people unemployed. For instance, the market for graphic designers has become more challenging due to AI-generated images. Currently, the drawbacks outweigh the benefits, and it will take several more years to assess this situation more precisely.

Is AI a threat to human civilization? Are there certain sections of people in the society who have extreme monopoly over it?

AI is causing escalating challenges in society, with its risks gradually emerging. The rising reliance on AI for tasks is resulting in inefficiencies among the younger generation. People are becoming heavily dependent on AI tools, posing significant dangers to their cognitive development.

There’s a clear imbalance in society, with a particular segment monopolizing knowledge of technology and exploiting it to their advantage over those who lack such understanding. This situation facilitates the implementation of tools that perpetuate racism, as seen in the discriminatory use of facial recognition technology against people of color.

The integration of new technology into the workforce poses significant challenges for Baby Boomers and Gen-X, as they struggle to adapt to these advancements, resulting in inefficiencies within organizations.

One of the most pressing concerns regarding AI is its potential application in warfare, often referred to as Hyperwar. AI lacks human emotions such as empathy, so when utilized in combat, it operates solely on logic, potentially leading to merciless killing.

Is AI a security or threat to the world? How do we analyze it?

It is quite difficult to put AI in one category and gives it a definite outlook. As discussed above, AI has its both advantage and disadvantage. It can be a source of ease and comfort for human civilization or a harbinger of doom and destruction. It is up to us on how it’s implemented, allocated and analyzed.

As Erik Brynjolfsson, director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy and author of “Machine, Platform, Crowd: Harnessing Our Digital Future,” said, “….so the right question is not ‘What will happen?’ but ‘What will we choose to do?’ We need to work aggressively to make sure technology matches our values. This can and must be done at all levels, from government, to business, to academia, and to individual choices.”
